The Queensland government has invited communities and industry to get involved in discussing key planning reforms set to be introduced in the state.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad released a new directions paper on May 25 that she claimed would help the development of a new Planning Act.
Titled Better Planning for Queensland, the document will guide a series of workshops commencing across the state next month, with a Planning Summit scheduled to take place in July.
“Queensland needs a fair and practical planning and development assessment framework to secure the long-term liveability, sustainability and prosperity for our communities, both now and into the future,” Ms Trad stated.
“Better Planning for Queensland honours the Palaszczuk government’s promise to Queenslanders that we would listen to councils, communities and the development industry to ensure new state planning and assessment laws were sensible, well-structured and easy to follow.”

Meanwhile, the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Queensland has praised the state government’s directions paper and efforts to consult with key stakeholders. “Investing in strategy and policy generates better planning outcomes and that means a better Queensland now and into the future,” she added.
Ms Trad claimed local councils would be given additional support to help them implement planning reforms. Specifically she said officials will receive training, guidance and access to tools aimed at facilitating the shift towards new legislation.
